So what, somebody left you in a rut
And wants to be the one who's in control
But the feeling that you're under can really make you wonder
How the hell she can be so cold
So now you're mad, denying the truth
And it's getting in the wisdom in the back of your tooth
Ya need ta spit it out, in a telephone booth
While ya call everyone that you know, and ask 'em
Where do you think she goes
Oh ya, where d'ya suppose she goes, oh
- "The Denial Twist" - The White Stripes, Get Behind Me Satan
On Tuesday, I went to Barnes & Noble, excited to use the gift card a friend had given me for my birthday. If you know me "in real life" you know I have a ton of books. And I have a great deal of them left to read. So while the thought of even more books was very tempting, I decided I'd make a music purchase... besides, CDs weigh a lot less when it comes time to pack up and move.
Last time I wrote about music, I wrote about Mario Frangoulis. I felt better about picking up Get Behind Me Satan by the White Stripes because at least I've heard "My Doorbell" on the radio a few times, and I'm fond of the song. Well, once the CD was popped in, I was won over. The minute "Blue Orchid" came pumping out of the speakers, I knew I would be listening to this CD all the way through. If you know me in person, you might also know that it's very rare that I listen to a CD all the way through - even if it's favorite artist of mine. I can have a CD for a year and not listen to every track on the album. I'm sure there are plenty of CDs I've had for years that I haven't listen to in their entirety yet.
Well, not so with this album. I listened to the whole thing. I must admit, it's taken me a few listens to warm up to some of the songs - but I've been listening to this album at every possible moment since I bought it. I still skip a couple of the tracks, but really, I listen to 10 out of 13 tracks, which is a lot better than I've done before. I think it's pretty great. I'm longing to see The White Stripes on tour now so I can be there when they perform these songs (and yes, of course, their other songs).
You should check out the music video to "My Doorbell" - it's great, I love it!
