Wisdom is the quality that keeps you from getting into situations where you need it.

Who is Doug Larson? I have no idea.

What Can We Do?

"We as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values.  We must rapidly begin the shift from a 'thing-oriented' society to a 'person-oriented' society.  When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important that people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered...American, the richest, most powerful nation in the world, can well lead the way in this revolution of values..."

Living with children

As I mentioned in my previous post, there were some cute little people here for the past couple of weeks. I gave numerous piggy back rides, played catch, and read stories. It was quite nice.  The little girl, who is three, was fond of holding my hand. Kids have cute widdle tiny handsies.  I also started thinking about the kids at the day camp. The ones who are about 10 and younger like to hold my hand (and the hands of the other volunteers). After that, I guess they are a little too cool to try anything like that. Ah, youth.

I thought to myself, the queen of singleness, "no one over the age of ten holds my hand! What an existence!" But then I quickly moved on to less depressing thoughts and thought about how kids "keep it real." Sure, kids can B.S. with the best of 'em, but for the most part, when they are young, they just tell it like it is.

"I like you."

"You're my friend."

"You're mean."

They hold your hand when they like you, they kick you in the shin when they don't.  Remember that great oldies tune "Smiling Faces"?

Smiling faces sometimes/Pretend to be your friend

Smiling faces/Show no traces/of the evil that lurks within

Can you dig it?

No, for real, can you dig it?  Kids don't B.S. like that. If some young tyke doesn't like me, I know it. Why can't big kids (a.k.a adults) stop jerking your chain and keep it real? It sure would take the guess work out of a lot of situations.

One more for the road

Ok, so I am *also* reading "First Things First Every Day: Because Where You're Headed is More Important Than How Fast You're Going." by Stephen R. Covey (of Franklin Covey)

I think the title alone is good enough.  Today is actually the first day I've started reading it.  The thought for today, May 3rd, is

The important thing is to keep trying

Boy, do I need to keep that in mind! Especially with all the stuff I've been going through lately.  I'm sure someone that reads this is also going through a hard time, and so I wanted to share this with you.

I vow to make May the best I possibly can.

Can we go back to May 1, please?

I updated my "bookshelf" here on the blog to reflect the books I'm actually reading, as opposed to the ones I'm supposed to be reading.  A couple weeks back, I quoted "Meditations For Women Who Do Too Much."  I haven't been reading it every day (but I pretty much knew that wasn't going to happen) but today I sat down and caught up on the past few days.  The quote that started off the May 1st entry was this:

Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are.  Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart.  Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow.  Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so.  One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return. - Mary Jean Iron

I thought about it for a while and realized how much I need to focus on each normal day and it's uniqueness instead of waiting for something better to happen.  What kind of way to live is that?

So yes, another thing I read that I wanted to pass on to you.

Back to finals.
