The summer seems like so long ago
I meant to do a photo post ages ago, but a couple of things happened. First I had to wait until I had access to my laptop (long story), so that I could upload my photos to Flickr. Once I posted the photos to Flickr, I found out there was no way I'd be able to do a batch post of the photos to my blog - I'd have to do them one by one. Not gonna happen.
So, I just decided to create a Flickr slideshow of the photos of my summer. The pictures are actually in reverse order for the most part. At first it was annoying, but the memories kind of got fonder, as the pictures got older.
The "show" starts out with a couple of pictures from my train travels from Los Angeles to Chicago for a family wedding (my cousin's cute kid made his way into the show). After that is a photo of my brother's frat headquarters and some pictures I took around Philly when he came to visit. And no, that's not be standing in front of the Liberty Bell.
Pictures of my and my internship folk before we went our separate ways are next, followed by photos from out weekend retreat, including pictures of Nacho playing guitar (he was pretty darn good!). Some kids from the daycamp I worked at, a random wedding cake (it got thrown in there out of order), a group photo by the dumpster (yay!).
There are shots from open mic night and the talent show. Pictures of the dance party, pictures from when a Capoiera instructor came (and we all got the hots for him), the views from my bedroom windows in PA, Parvin Lake in New Jersey, pictures from the orchard/farm, Amish country, Eyes Wide Open memorial, and some shots of people from my internship wrap things up.
I met some pretty fantastic people this summer - and as I recently told them, once I got home, I for a couple of days I just kind of sat around, not knowing what to do without them!
Feel free to adjust the time on the slideshow to your liking, and use pause if necessary. Yay, photos!

Dry heat!
Well, I made it home.
For our closing retreat, my group and I went to Ocean City, New Jersey. On Friday evening, I spent some time walking along the boardwalk with a couple of the girls in my program. It was a nice time, yet kind of bittersweet knowing that in 48 hours I'd be home and have no idea when I was going to see them again.
On Saturday, a good chunk of the day was spent at the beach. I knew when we chose the destination for our retreat that I wasn't going to be doing any beach-ing. So, when we got there, as everyone fled toward the ocean, I headed for the boardwalk and spent the afternoon having lunch and browsing at a couple of bookstores.
Come Saturday night, we had a dinner party that was quite nice, but again, bittersweet. We "toasted" and talked, one person gave us all little mementos. After that, we spent time writing affirmations to each other, then I played a late night game of Monopoly with Nacho, German, and Caitlin and then talked with them until almost 4 in the morning. So weird that it was out last night together.
On Sunday, we ventured back to "headquarters," said our final words, hugged and started to get ready to part ways. I was the third one to leave when my mom and brother came for me. Oh man, I did not want to cry! I mean you can't just live with a group of people very intensely for 7 weeks (and I mean INTENSELY) and then expect leaving to be easy. The remaining folks gathered around and gave me a big group hug and I was off.
Sigh.
My brother decided to extend my ticket, so rather than going home on Sunday night as planned, I'd be leaving Monday night instead. On Sunday night my brother and I went to this great Italian restaurant in Philly called Maggiano's. Such good food. On Monday, I saw my mom off and then spent some time with my brother and rushed off to the airport.
The rushing was in vain. Rain....rain rain rain. Delays. Delays delays delays. Considering I got to the airport 2 and a half hours before my flight was to leave and 4 hour delay, I was at the airport for almost 7 hours...and the 5 hour flight home turned into a 6 hour one. I arrived in Los Angeles at 1:30 in the morning....4:30am East Coast time. Considering I had been up since 5:30 that morning, I was not quite happy.
But I made it home....where the heat is dry, the bugs aren't noisy, and I have easy access to burgers and fries. You have no idea how much I miss the people in my program. It's pretty crazy if I do say so myself.

Last week of the internship!
This is probably my last blog update from PA. We are leaving in about two hours for our closing retreat in Atlantic City. I might do a post about the people in my program, but that will probably be done once I get home on Monday, or Tuesday if I'm really busy. --------------------------------------------
On Monday and Wednesday my workcrew leader was gone taking care of personal business, so I got to work on grounds. It's not the most fun for me, but the people who work on the grounds crew are awesome and I got to have some one-on-one talk time with them, which was great because I had been hoping I wouldn't leave with out that.
On Tuesday my mom came into town, so since I was done with the daycamp, I chilled for most of the morning and then went to pick her up at the train station and bring her back.
Wednesday night was our group's Community Presentation. We got all dressed up and a couple of people shared their talents. I dont have any talents, so I didnt share. After that, we had a skit, which went over REALLY WELL. We had a short Q& A Session, and as we were getting ready to depart, oen of my group members asked us to all hold hands, and then she led us in this song....but before she started she got a little sniffly....if you knew her, you would know that if SHE was getting sniffly, it was over for the rest of us. When it was over I was boohooing like a baby. It was nasty. Aaaaaawwwwwwww, i love these kids.
On Thursday, I spent most of the day at the hospital. I might have "caught something." But there's no sense in getting worked up until the blood work comes back in a couple of days. Haha...yeah...not that funny. We had our last reflection group, but I didnt have much to say since I had finished at my service site (the daycamp) a week ago. Most of us were stressed because we have SO MUCH to do before we leave to today - LONG evaluation forms, packing everything up (most of us are leaving right after we return from Atlantic City.
It's been a long few weeks, but short at the same time. No deep thoughts yet. Maybe I'll have some when I get home. Gotta go!
Week 6
On the weekend of the 30th, we spend some time in Lancaster County (a.k.a. Amish Country) doing some work at a Quaker school and "bonding" with each other. I was a bit on the bored side as there wasn't anything I was particularly interested in doing while we were there. And I'm upset that I didn't get to try the white pizza with broccoli.
On Monday and Wednesday, we had the usual work crews.
My daycamp had no trip on Tuesday, so that Thursday was my last day there. We went to the home of these two women who had a beautiful house, a huge back and yard and a swimming pool - with a diving board. The kids were really excited about that. And between the ladies, their elderly mothers, and the help of their neighbors, I got to have a kick back day - playing backgammon with a seven year old, laying in a hammock for the first time, and most importantly, eating snacks all day.
On Friday, we had a maintainence work morning, with a break for a nice refreshing treat of "water ice" (don't ask). On Friday night, a couple of people went into NYC. I decided to stay back, which I later regretted, but oh well. On Saturday I went into Philly and found a used bookstore where I spent way too much money and now I don't know how I'm going to get all of that stuff home!
Sunday was mostly boring until our late afternoon workshop with Carrie Newcomer, a singer, songwriter, and activist. I actually met her at lunch with my director so I got to talk to her a bit before the whole workshop. She sang a few songs, talked to us, and led us in a writing exercise.
The people who went to NYC came back and told me about all the fun things they did and how I should have gone. I relaly should have - I missed them waaay to much and it was way too quiet around here without them.
We decided to go on a random trip to Philly....and Delaware. And the details are in this post (http://cogentdiversion.typepad.com/cogent_diversion/2005/08/23_and_24.html).
On to the last week!
23. and 24.
Groups of friends and random road trips!
Yesterday, G! and a couple of other people came back from a weekend trip to NYC that I decided to sit out on. What a mistake! And I’ll tell you, I regretted that decision right smack in the middle of the weekend.
Anyway, it was a pretty boring weekend without them around (and even more quiet!), but they came back full of stories and telling me they missed me and that I should have gone (I know, I know!)
C came back with a car (thank god) and she’s just this girl full of life and energy and spontenaity that I admire to no end. She got the itch to just go somewhere (which is an itch I often find myself wanting to have scratched), so we gathered N and G! and started driving. G! and I talked about exchanging email addresses and writing to each other (the internship ends in 6 days!).
We ended up in Philly. We parked around 10th and South Street and walked all the way down to the Delaware River and back (at least I think it’s the Delaware). Then we were talking so much that we missed our turn and ended up in Delaware. Woohoo, so now I’ve officially been to Delaware ;-)
I think it was really what I needed. I regret not going with them to NYC, but thats in the past now. I needed to just get out and do something fun with people. I dont have friends that go “lets take a road trip!†and on top of that, I dont have a group of friends – none of my friends are friends with each other! So I dont have those moments in the car where theres 2 conversations going on and you cant hear anything, you’re arguing over what music to play on the radio, and you cant walk down the sidewalk shoulder to shoulder because you dont fit.
Just a couple of photos
I was finally able to get some stuff onto disc, so I thought I'd share.
These are the people in my program with me (minus, someone who is apparently hiding, the girl who is sick and the one who quit). I might take this down if people are opposed to it.
This is one of the boys from the day camp. He has the most beautiful eyes....this is the frog he caught.
I have photos with me in them, but I look like crap, and I didn't have the time to black my face out. That's for later.
